Buchanan’s Lookout is situated approximately 2 km due east of Bundanoon atop the western escarpment that overlooks Bundanoon Creek. The lookout can be accessed via an un-signposted track, but unless you were familiar with the area, a topographical map and compass, and a good knowledge of how to use them, is essential if you want to visit the lookout (and get back).
The older brother, Jack, served in WW1 and until the Great Depression, with his brother-in-law, John Posker, owned a grocery store in Bundanoon. Jack married, in 1921, John’s sister, Anne Mary Posker, and John married, in 1922, Jack’s sister, Catherine Jane Buchanan. Jack was very active in the community, especially the Bundanoon Sub-Branch of Returned Serviceman’s League. It is not known if Jack and Anne had any children.
The younger brother, Alec, served in WW2 and died in Greece. He did not marry.
The brothers were the sons of John Buchanan (?-1923) and Isabella Matheson (1861-1952) who married in 1891 and lived at Dapto. Their siblings were:
William Wilson Buchanan (1892-1948)
Catherine Jane Buchanan (1893-1971) who married John Posker
Rebecca Buchanan (1898-1973)
Walter Buchanan (1900-1905)
Rodrick “Roy” Buchanan (1903-1980)
John Buchanan, sen, had a brother, William Buchanan (1869-1936) who also lived, initially, in Dapto. William married, in 1898, Rebecca Wilson (1873-1935). This family moved to Neutral Bay, Sydney.
