Danzy Buchanan Park is named after Danzy Colin Buchanan (1927 1987) who owed and farmed land in Deception Bay, then he and his wife moved to Mango Hill, where the property was subsequently sub-divided. Danzy was born into a farming family in Holmes Street, Brighton, Brisbane, Queensland.
Parents -
Danzy’s parents were George Buchanan (1886, Nudgee, Queensland – 1940, Brighton, Queensland) who married Gertrude Mary Gamble (1890-1972) in 1913, Bald Hills, Queensland and was a farmer in the Sandgate district. They had 9 children, who have been outstanding in their willingness to lend a hand to others, and it is to their credit that George and Gertie’s grandchildren and great grandchildren also display these fine qualities.

Clarence Henry Buchanan (1914 - 1970) who was a farmer at Rothwell, Redcliffe. He married Thelma Pfeffer (1921 – 1995) in 1940 AT Wynnum and raised 9 children. One of their children, Robert James Buchanan b. 1945, had the original vision of researching and organising the Buchanan Family Genealogy book “Buchanan – Balfron to Brisbane” released 2003 with photos and stories.
Olive Ethel Buchanan (1916 – 1985) wed Charles Gordon (1904 – 1975) at Tweed Heads in 1946. They had 3 daughters.
Ronald George Buchanan (1918 – 2002) was a builder in the Brighton and Sandgate district. He married Evelyn Gynther (1918 – 2006) in Sandgate in 1941 and welcomed 4 children into the family.
Walter John Buchanan (1920 - ) was also a successful farmer at Deception Bay and in 1942 married Evelyn’s sister, Mary Gynther (1920 – 2007) at Sandgate. They had 4 children. It was Walter, who in December 2003, had the privilege of presenting the first published copy of the Family Book “Buchanan – Balfron to Brisbane” when 450 descendants of Alexander Buchanan & Martha Kay who migrated from Scotland to Brisbane, gathered at a family reunion . A Re-enactment of the family’s 1862 arrival was a highlight of the reunion with various family members of similar age chosen to act the parts of Alexander, Martha and the 6 children who arrived with them aboard the “Wansfell”. In 2011, Walter still resides in Deception Bay, Queensland.
James Robert Buchanan (1922 – 1962) who served in New Guinea during WWII, was a farmer who took over his father, George’s Holmes Street, Brighton farm. He married Ailsa ‘Joan’ Irvine (1923 – 2005) in 1949 in Sandgate and they had 5 children. This family’s connection with the Holmes Street property concluded in 2008.
Marion Edith Buchanan (1925-2009) was also raised on the family farm at Brighton. She married Kenneth Holloway (1925 - ) and they had 6 children. In 2011, Ken still lives at Flaxton on the Blackall Range property.
Danzy Colin Buchanan (1927 – 1987) who was firstly a farmer in Brighton, then became successful farming in Deception Bay, before moving to farm the property at Kinsellas Road, Mango Hill. He married Lillian Ethel Shoebridge i(1923 - ) in 1948 and they had 3 children. Lil still resides at Mango Hill in 2011. Continued ….
Pearl Iris Buchanan (1929 - ) was raised at Holmes Street, Brighton. In 1951 at Sandgate she married Keith Maxwell Higgs (1930 - ) and they were busy farmers at Deception Bay, adjoining her brother, Danzy’s property. They reared 6 children. Higgs Road, Deception Bay is named after this family.
Mary Gertrude Buchanan (1931 – 2009) grew up on her parent’s Holmes Street farm. She married Geoffrey Balme (1938 - ) in Brighton in 1961, and spent most of their years on a property at Mt Cotton. They had 6 children.

Grandfather: Danzy’s grandfather was James Buchanan (1857, Airdrie, Scotland – 1950, Brisbane, Queensland) came to Australia with his parents and 5 sisters in 1862 on the ‘Wansfell’. James married Mary Smiley (1858 - 1933) at Nudgee, Brisbane, Queensland in 1882 and farmed in Nudgee before moving his family to take up adjoining allotments in Holmes Street, Brighton, a suburb of Brisbane. He had 7 children – Ellen Buchanan (1883 - 1962) who married Robert Carseldine in 1911; John Buchanan (1884 - 1967) (Cecil’s father) who married Rose Krosch in 1909; George Buchanan (1886 – 1940) who married Gertrude Gamble in 1913 and had 9 children; Annie Buchanan (1887 – 1972) who married George ‘Herbert’ Chadwick (1884-1969) in 1908 and raised 5 children; Alexander James Buchanan (1889 – 1969) wed Hellen ‘Jean’ Murray (1892 - 1935) and had 4 children; Ethel Mary Buchanan (1891 – 1985) who in 1930 married Edward Atkey (1894 – 1971); and Harold Henry Buchanan (1905 – 1990) who in 1932 married Edna Smith (1906 – 1972) and raised two children, Joan (b 1933) and Ian Harold (b 1939).
Great Grandfather: Danzy’s great grandfather was Alexander Buchanan (1825, Balfron, Scotland – 1913 Wooloowin, Brisbane, Queensland) who married Martha Kay (1828 - 1913) at Glasgow, Scotland in 1849, came to Australia with his wife and 6 of their children in 1862 aboard the ‘Wansfell’. They had 3 more children born in Brisbane. Alexander farmed in Nudgee (Of interest - much of the land he farmed is now part of the Brisbane airport and surrounds. Buchanan Rd, Nudgee [near the airport]was named after him). He had 11 children, two of whom were buried as infants in Scotland. The surviving 9 children named Martha (1850 – 1920); Ann (1851 – 1935); Jean (1853 – 1942); James (1857 – 1950); Mary (1858 – 1893); Elizabeth (1860 – 1949); Alexander (1863 – 1942); Violet (1865 – 1964); and John Duncan (1867 – 1953).
GG Grandfather: Danzy’s great grandfather was Duncan Buchanan (1803, Balfron, Scotland – 1879, Wooloowin, Queensland) who married Ann McNicol (1803-1855) at Glasgow, Scotland in 1824, who was an agricultural labourer in Balfron. Near the end of his life, with his daughter Ann, came to Australia in 1874 on the ‘Darling Downs’. He had 5 children: Alexander (1825 – 1913); Sarah (b 1827); Mary (b abt. 1829); John (b abt. 1833) and Ann (b abt. 1839).
GGG Grandfather: Danzy’s GGG grandfather was Alexander John Buchanan (1758, Kilmahog, Scotland – 1813, Balfron, Scotland) who married Mary Ure . They had 11 children: Agnes (b 1787), Archibald (b 1788), Margaret (b & d 1790), Margaret (b 1792), Jean (b 1796), John (b 1798), William (b 1801), Duncan (1803 – 1879) and Christian (b 1808).
